Cómo comprimir vídeo sin perder demasiada calidad

Guía práctica sobre resolución, bitrate, códecs y decisiones de compresión para reducir el tamaño de vídeo.

Why video files become so large

Video size is driven mainly by duration, resolution, frame rate, codec and bitrate. A ten-minute clip at 4K can be many times larger than the same scene at 1080p, even before audio and metadata are considered.

Compression works by spending fewer bits on information that is less important to perceived quality. The challenge is to reduce unnecessary data without introducing distracting blockiness, banding, smearing or soft text.

Start with resolution before extreme compression

If the destination only needs 720p, converting a 4K source to 720p usually saves more space cleanly than forcing an extremely low bitrate while keeping every 4K pixel. The same principle applies when a 1080p master is being prepared for a small mobile preview.

Keep the original source archived. Delivery copies are easier to recreate than lost source detail.

Choose a sensible codec and quality target

H.264 remains a practical compatibility choice for MP4 delivery. Quality-based encoders commonly expose a CRF-style control: lower values preserve more detail and create larger files, while higher values reduce size at the cost of quality.

There is no single perfect value for every video. Screen recordings, animation, grainy camera footage and fast sports footage react differently to the same compression settings.

Do not forget the audio track

For spoken video, audio can often use a moderate AAC bitrate without becoming the dominant source of quality loss. Music-heavy content may justify a higher audio bitrate.

When the video does not need sound at all, removing the audio track is a simple way to save additional space.

A reliable workflow

Create one compressed derivative, watch representative scenes, check text and faces, then compare file size with the original. If quality is still higher than necessary, make a second export from the original source rather than repeatedly recompressing the already compressed result.
