About PDF to Text

Extract selectable text from a PDF document into a plain UTF-8 text file using pdftotext. The pdftotext utility extracts the document text layer. Scanned PDFs without a text layer require OCR and are not handled by this tool.

How to use PDF to Text

Upload a PDF file and run the conversion. ToolFlow processes the temporary source and returns a separate Text file, leaving your original untouched.

When PDF to Text is useful

  • Open or publish a PDF file in a workflow that expects Text.
  • Create a Text derivative for sharing while keeping the original PDF source archived.
  • Handle a one-off PDF-to-Text conversion without installing a dedicated desktop converter.

Practical tips

  • Keep the original document because complex layouts, fonts and forms can behave differently after conversion.
  • Scanned PDFs may contain only images; text extraction requires an actual text layer unless OCR is added separately.
  • Check important documents after processing before sending or archiving the output.

PDF to Text FAQ

Does PDF to Text change my original input?

No. ToolFlow works on a temporary upload or submitted value and returns a separate result. Your local original is not overwritten.

Do I need to install software to use PDF to Text?

No browser extension or desktop application is required. Some file tools depend on server modules such as FFmpeg, GD, Poppler or LibreOffice being enabled by the site operator.

Privacy and file handling

Uploaded files are processed in temporary server storage. ToolFlow attempts to delete temporary source and output files after processing or delivery. Do not upload material you are not authorized to process. See the Privatsphär for details.
